Long time viewers of the channel know that my morse code journey is long and convoluted. I needed to learn the code to get beyond the Technician license back in 1999, and since then, reacquainting myself with it has gone in fits and spurts. That’s why when Radioddity sent me these two keys to test out, I had to get Dave on board.

Dave’s CW foundation is a little stronger than mine, as a young Novice, the code was burned into him, and when he upgraded to General back in the 1970’s he swore he’d never use the code again. But the seed had already been planted, and I thankfully rely on his experience when it comes to CW operation.

This week’s video is the results of that. We test out Radioddity’s two new morse code keys, the VK-5 Straight Key and the VK-6 Paddle. (Yes, that’s my fist in the two product voice over segments of the video). You can watch: Straight Key or Paddle? Which is BEST for you? here: https://youtu.be/vXoiASq4f_o

Baofengs in unlikely places

Opening up my email this morning, I received the following ad from Menards, a popular home improvement chain here in the Midwest.

Menards, well known for their banjo laden jingle and catchphrase “Save Big Money” also has a reputation for cheap lumber and dubious power tools. So it comes at no surprise to me that they’d sell the cheapest two way radio on the market.

I guess the email hit the spot, because no sooner than I got the ad announcing that over 360 were available for immediate shipment to your local store, they were sold out. If you were one of the lucky few that shared this deal, make sure to save your receipt for the 11% rebate off your next purchase.

Finishing up

Our 3rd annual Wisconsin Ham Radio Campout is less than 10 days away. Buckhorn State Park, US-1443, is sold out, and I’m looking forward to spending the weekend with the 50 or so campers and hams signed up for the event. For those that are unable to make it, there will be plenty of content shared through out the month of October of the event. I won’t be able to livestream due to the poor wireless coverage, but I’ll capture the essence of the event in other ways.

Season 14 of the channel is also starting in a couple of weeks. I’ve got some great stuff in the works to carry us into the autumn months, but am always looking for new and interesting content. If there is something you’d like to see on the channel, please let me know by dropping a comment or sending me an email to kb9vbr@jpole-antenna.com

I hope to catch you on the air soon.
