Camping and Ham Radio – POTA in the Kettle Moraine State Forest

What’s your favorite part of camping? The fire, the food, the ham radio? Chris and I share that and more as we explore the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Southeast Wisconsin. The Kettle Moraine State Forest POTA K-4352 and Long Lake Recreation Area K-4260 is a Parks on the Air Two-fer.

Dutch Oven Nachos:
9 Oz bag of tortilla chips
1 cup Salsa or Picante
8oz Package (2 cups) Mexican blend cheese
1 large Avocado
1 bunch green onions
1 bunch fresh cilantro
1 can Black Beans (14.5 ounce)
1 can green chilis or fresh sliced Jalapenos (optional)
Sour Cream

  1. Coat the bottom of dutch oven with spray oil or use dutch oven liner to keep nachos from sticking
  2. Layer the nachos: 1/3 each of chips, sauce, avocado, onions, cilantro. Top with 1/4 of cheese. Repeat for second and third layer.
  3. On the third layer spread the green chilis or sliced jalapenos. Cover with remaining cheese
  4. Cover and cook in a medium heat dutch over (7-9 coals on bottom, 13-15 on top) for about 15-20 minutes or until cheese has melted. Serve with sour cream.
