The Kenwood TM-V71A is a great dual band radio. With easy to use features and full duplex operation on VHF and UHF, this rig is destined to be a favorite in both mobile and base station operation. But there aren’t very many online reviews of this rig, so Rory fired up his camera and did an excellent walkthrough of this versatile rig. You can view the video below or Youtube.

Antenna being used for this demonstration is the KB9VBR 2 meter J-Pole antenna. The TM-V71A is a dual band rig and the J-Pole works very well as a dual band antenna, as this video attests.

On a side note, our local ARES/RACES group has installed the Kenwood TM-V71A in our two area hospitals for emergency communication, and we continue to recommend the TM-V71A for any area served agency that wants to build a permament hamshack in their facility. It’s a rock solid rig and I highly recommend it.

Finally, did you know that the TM-V71A and the Kenwood TM-D710 share the same lineage? The transmitter and receiver portion of the rigs are identical, the only difference is the control head. You can swap heads and turn your TM-V71A into a full digital APRS rig.
