This past weekend both the House and the Senate passed the Local Community Radio Act of 2009. This bill allows for the construction and operation of Low Power FM or LPFM community based radio stations. The stations will still need to be licensed by the FCC and their signal can’t interfere with established commercial radio stations. But this is a giant step forward for community radio and the broadcasting of alternative views and programming.
As stated in the findings of the Bill SB592:
Through the creation of LPFM, the Commission sought to ‘create opportunities for new voices on the air waves and to allow local groups, including schools, churches, and other community-based organizations, to provide programming responsive to local community needs and interests’.
